Day With(out) Art / World AIDS Day  (Exhibits (Museum, Gardens, ...))

The Michigan State University Museum marks Day With(out) Art / World AIDS Day, on Saturday, Dec. 1 with a special showing from its Siyazama collection, a South African arts project using traditional arts in health education and HIV/AIDS prevention.

Day With(out) Art began on Dec. 1, 1989, as a national day of action and mourning in response to the AIDS crisis. To make the public more aware of how AIDS can touch everyone, many galleries and museums shut down for a day to symbolize absence and loss. Over the years, rather than closing down on Dec. 1, Day With(out) Art programs have worked to highlight more proactive educational programming related to AIDS education, joining with World AIDS Day.

On exhibit will be a new acquisition to the MSU Museum collections, a Story Vase, embellished with a beaded message written by bead artist Lobolile Ximba of South Africa. The story vases tell the personal stories of Lobolile and other South African women who live in remote villages of KwaZulu-Natal.  They are all members of the Siyazama Project, a collective of women who work with traditional bead craft.
